Tobacco is originated from American continent; it belongs to the same family as potato and pepper. Tobacco seeds are rather small, 1 oz contains about 300 000 seeds. It is considered that tobacco was cultivated in VI century B.C. In I century B.C. American Indians use tobacco for medical and religious purposes. Tobacco leaves were put on wounds as analgesic. And chewing tobacco relieved toothache.
In 1492, 15 of October, tobacco was offered to Christopher Columbus by American Indians as a gift. Soon after this, tobacco was brought in Europe, and it cultivated all over the world. The main reason of tobacco popularity was its healing properties. Tobacco was considered to be panacea from any illnesses. In 1571 Spanish doctor Nicholas Mondares wrote a book about healing plants of the New World. It was written in this book about tobacco which was able to cure 36 diseases. In XVII century tobacco became so popular, that it was used in stead of money sometimes.to be continued.
